Summer is here and we all know sunglasses are a major fashion statement when the sun is out, but do you know about their health benefits?

1) Protection from UV Rays: Sunglasses provide protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to various eye problems, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and photokeratitis (sunburn of the cornea). Good quality sunglasses with UV protection can block out both UVA and UVB rays, safeguarding your eyes from potential damage

2) Glare Reduction: Sunglasses reduce the amount of glare caused by bright sunlight reflecting off surfaces such as water, snow, or roads. Glare can be uncomfortable and can strain your eyes, leading to fatigue and headaches. By wearing sunglasses, you can improve visual comfort and maintain better visual acuity, especially in bright outdoor environments

3) Blue Light Filtering: Some sunglasses are designed to filter out a portion of high-energy blue light. Blue light is emitted by the sun as well as electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers. Prolonged exposure to blue light can cause eye strain, disrupt sleep patterns, and potentially contribute to long-term retinal damage. Sunglasses with blue light filtering properties can help mitigate these effects

4) Eye Health and Comfort: Wearing sunglasses can promote overall eye health and comfort. They protect the delicate tissues around the eyes, including the eyelids and the skin around them, from sunburn and the development of wrinkles. Additionally, sunglasses can prevent dryness and irritation caused by wind and dust, creating a more comfortable outdoor experience.
When selecting sunglasses, it's important to choose ones that provide adequate UV protection. Look for sunglasses labeled as UV400, polarized, or ones that mention blocking 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
Opting for sunglasses with larger frames or wraparound styles can provide better coverage and minimize peripheral light entering your eyes. Consider consulting an eye care professional for personalized advice on choosing the right sunglasses for your needs
