WHAT LASER SURGERIES ARE AVAILABLE?
There are different types of refractive surgery that can be more effective for certain prescriptions: Lasik is the most common procedure in which a superficial corneal flap is created with a microkeratome or laser. Once the flap is created, it is pulled back and a laser reshapes the deeper layers of the cornea. The amount of cornea that needs reshaping depends on your initial prescription. The flap is then re-positioned and settles back naturally without any stitches required. Lasek is a similar procedure to Lasik except a thinner blade called a trephine is used to create the corneal flap. This is more ideal for candidates with thinner corneas that may not be candidates for Lasik. PRK chemically removes the surface layer of the cornea and then reshapes the deeper layers of the cornea with a laser. This technique is better for individuals with a thinner cornea and is a safer option for those who play any contact sports. The technique does have a slightly longer recovery period than Lasik but does have the same visual outcome. |
